Dual Functionality In Plain Sight: A Secret Bookcase Door

This project was designed to conceal a door that leads to a private bedroom from a living space. The ultimate goal is to encourage the user of the living space to use the guest bathroom on the primary floor instead of the private bathroom on the secondary floor.

The homeowners had recently renovated a bonus room above their garage with a separate dedicated staircase to access the room from the main level of the home. They chose to leave the original fire door to the space from when it was an unfinished room. Unfortunately, during social events, they noticed guests using the fire door to use the bathroom on the second floor.

This bookcase door design has two identical bookshelves, one that conceals the door frame and another that helps to hide the form of a door. The middle moving shelf system was custom sized to hold DVD cases since the room is primarily a theater room. The door on the bedroom side still has the ability to be locked during social events. The book hinge was designed to allow slack for guests who know about the bookcase door and try to open it while it is locked. The tension wires allow for the book hinge to retract back into its original spot.
