Seascape: A Theater Lighting Design in the Minor Lantham Playhouse

Seascape by Edward Albee, to me is primarily about the concept of stepping forward into the future as an adventure instead of fearing it as well as living life to its fullest. The play is trying to convey the message that one should take life as an adventure, always try new things and actually “live.”

The design visually emphasizes the concept that life is literally bright and full of possibilities. The set will be a vibrant tropical beach setting because a tropical beach is calming and inviting as well as bursting with life in various colors. The set itself will be filled with tropical plants that are saturated with colors. The lighting will be centered on creating a bright but soft tonal atmosphere. The bright lighting will emphasize Charlie’s inability to seek adventure as well as Nancy’s lust for it. The white light will be accomplished by mixing complementary colors. The set will be lit in this bright and vibrant fashion for the entire play except for the ending. The ending will transition into being lit like a sunset to signify the closing of one day so another can begin. It will emphasize that the four main characters have made the decision to continue to “live” life and thus that day can end so their new adventure can begin.
